Wee Nam Kee -- a taste of Singaporean Cuisine

My brother in-law would like his dad to have a taste of authentic Singaporean food… and of course the first thing that comes to our mind when we talk about Singaporean Food is no other than “Hainanese Chicken Rice”…

Though Hainanese Chicken Rice originated from Hainan, China, it has now also found its home in Singapore as their national dish due to immigration. It is also known as Singaporean Chicken Rice it is served either steamed or roasted.

Fortunately, we now have Wee Nam Kee restaurant here in the Philippines. They actually opened late last year and I have read several blogs about it.

Wee Nam Kee has made its name originally in Singapore as a top contender for serving the best Hainanese chicken rice alongside Boon Tong Kee and Tian Tian.

As I have read in one of the blogs, all their ingredients are sourced locally.  Their secret is that the chickens are freshly delivered everyday from 3 small farm suppliers that alternate delivery. They are chilled -- not frozen.

Now moving on the food:

1)      Of course, our number one got to be the chicken rice. We really need to verify if the chicken rice has the authentic Singaporean taste. It definitely met our expectation. It is delectably juicy and flavorful. It is not too oily and has the right amount of drizzled soy sauce and sesame oil. The chicken skin does not have that extra layer of fat, though. Since we are a big group, we ordered the whole chicken and opted for roasted, instead of steamed. Though it was roasted, it remained juicy and moist.

Personal Set (P168) served with Chicken Soup.
Small - Quarter 2pax (P248)
Medium - Half 3-4 pax (P488)
Large - Whole 6-7 pax (P888)
Steamed, Roasted or with Soya Sauce

It also comes with a chicken broth, it had such a rich bouquet of flavors that we imagined the hundreds of chickens that were boiled in it. It only prepared us for the succulent white meat of the steamed chicken.
You also have the option to customize the sauces to suit your taste and complete your authentic chicken rice experience. They offer unlimited chili sauce, sweet soy sauce and ginger. It is recommended to mix all three together.

2)    Aside from the chicken rice, cereal prawns are a must-order! Though it is a bit pricey because it costs P375 for 4 pcs of prawns. This is another authentic Singaporean dish! It has bits of chili but it was not spicy at all.

3)    We also ordered Pork Asado – thinly sliced pork strips that’s jam-packed with flavor.
4)    We also ordered Hongkong Fried Noodles, Sambal Kangkong and Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet (not in picture).

Over-all, the food was great and it is close to the authentic Singaporean food.

With regards to the place, their interiors give off the old-fashioned street food alley vibe with wood-colored roofs paralleled on both sides of the dining area and beautiful bird cage drop lights. Wee Nam Kee only seats around 60 guests and is normally full during peak hours. I suggest that you make reservations to avoid the long queue.
