2010... the year that was

Image
Today is the last day of 2010.... and I have mixed emotions... allow me to reminisce the good and bad memories of this year... January - I started the year with high hopes... with a positive outlook in life, looking forward to big things to come. February - Daddy's birth month! We all went to singapore to celebrate my dad's 65th birthday. Though I have been to singapore several times already, this trip is special because it was the first time that I was Singapore with my complete family. It was truly a celebration of life! :) March - Baby Month! On March 7, 2010, I got two lines on a pregnancy stick. I was so shock and I even cried! I began to imagine myself of being a mom after 9 months, having a baby to hold in my hand and having a complete family. April - D&C Month! I was diagnosed to have an anembryonic pregnancy... I was pregnant, but there was no baby. I had to undergo D&C. We were sad to have lost our unborn baby... but we were also happy because it gav...

Acts of Kindness

Have you ever helped someone replace a flat tire? Or let someone be ahead of a long line? Or have given up a seat for someone in the MRT? When my dad passed away last October 22, I was touched to hear kind words about my dad from strangers. Even the garbage collectors, fish vendors, water delivery boys and security guards were also grieving about the sudden passing of my dad. They speak about my dad’s random acts of kindness that truly made a difference in their lives. Giving directions to strangers who seems to be lost, chitchatting with the security guards, telling jokes to the vendors, or giving a warm smile to strangers are just few random acts of kindness my dad did before. By strict definition taken from the internet: A random act of kindness is something said or done to make another feel good while expecting absolutely nothing in return, not even gratitude. To be most effective, this act of kindness is done for someone just met or someone never met, thus the word "ran...

Eulogy to a great father, our hero -- my daddy -- Bayani A. Garin

Image
My dad calls me Bubbles-ko. Sasabihin ni mom, bakit sino ba umaaangkin nyan? Yes, I am a daddy’s girl. Ay sorry, I am equally close to my mom and my dad pala… hehehe J Kidding aside,   true to his name, he is really my hero. He is always there for me. Since most of you know the stories of our lives because of my dad and how he brags about our accomplishments, allow me now to share bits and stories about my dad that makes me a very proud daughter. He is my driver. He would drive me to school, to work, and even to my graduation ball. He would also pick me up, exactly at the time I told him to or usually, earlier pa. I remember when I was still in Zilog, we were off at 4:45, but my dad will be at the parking lot at around 4:30. My mom would tease my dad, ano ba sinusundo mo… prep? He is my teacher. He taught me a lot of things and I excelled in school because of my great teachers at home. He is also my project partner. When I was still studying, cramming was my specialty. I would do ...

To crave or not to crave: Crave Burger

Image
Gerard and I love burgers. We are always excited if there are new burger joints. Last Sunday, we went to Crave Burger, at BF Paranaque. They are still on dry run but of course, it did not stop us from trying their burgers as they claim 100% pure beef! J The menu is simple since aside from chicken wings and the usual accompaniments like onion rings and fries, they only serve burgers. You just have a choice whether you want your burger to have single or double patty. You can also choose from different add-ons such as american cheese, bleu cheese, maple bacon etc. But unlike Brother’s burger or Army Navy, they offer combo meals which comes with the burger, fries and drink (red iced tea or blue lemonade). Of course, we opted for the combo meal to make our meal complete. The burger patty is huge! It’s not that dry nor oily. The burger bun though was ordinary. It was just reheated in an oven toaster so it was served, soft and warm. They call their fries skinny, so I thought that thei...

Birthday, birthday, what a happy day! :)

Image
I used to have my birthday parties at home. I can still remember days before my birthday, we would go to Goldilocks to order the cake of my choice. I will then go shopping to find the perfect birthday dress for the party. On my birthday, everyone will be busy preparing for the party. Nanay nene will cook the spaghetti, mommy will prepare the fruit salad, lumpiang shanghai, chicken lollipop and all other food prepared in a typical children party. My mom would also prepare the fruit punch which is a staple in an 80's party. We also have parlor games such as pabitin, coke drinking contest, longest line, musical chairs etc. Therefore I always look forward to my birthday... Because I know it will be special. But of course, when we get older, especially during our teenage years, our perception on things and occasions changes. We find it baduy to have parties with games. We just treat our friends out or if we do have parties at home, it will be different....

Tony Roma's: Best Ribs in Town! :)

Image
It's already a tradition for Gerard and I to go to Tony Roma's ATC during our birthdays... it is our special restaurant.. (our normal restaurant is Italiannis.. by the way) Anyway, for us, Tony Roma's has the best ribs in town! It is like Racks because the meat falls off the bone... but it's better because it is more leaner and more flavorful... mmmm....yummy! :) So of course, since we are just two, we decided to get the BBQ Chicken and Ribs Combo. It comes with a soup of your choice and 2 side dishes. Now allow me to be a restaurant critic as I try to evaluate each item, one by one... Disclaimer: I am not an expert on this, everything is just based on my personal opinion, I am not in anyway an endorser of the said restaurant. Food: 1) Bread -- this is also one of the reasons why we keep on coming back... it's was served warm, crunchy on the outside, so soft in the inside... went well with the herbed butter spread... 2) Soup -- I was presented with 2 choic...

Happy birthday to me! Though I don't like the fact that I am getting older and that I am no longer in my twenties... I am still happy to celebrate my birthday... here's why: 1) I was allowed to go on leave... I had a break from all the quarter end pressures...   2) Perfect weather... no Milenyo nor Ondoy that ruined my day 3) Thanks to FB, everyone became thoughtful and greeted me on my special day... 4) Had homemade lasagna for lunch... yummy!!! 5) Had freshly baked chocolate fudge brownies for dessert... yummy again! Thanks to my ever dependable friend, betty crocker... hehehe :) 6) Greeted by Jada with her super sweet smile and received a special kiss from Francine 7) Had sumptuous dinner at Toni Roma's... yummy again! 8) Finally, I was able to wear the pearl earrings and necklace given by my sister and brother-in-law 9) Attended mass to give thanks to God for 30 wonderful years 10) Received special phone call from my sister 11) My nanny came from Bata...

Glee Season 2

Image
Glee Season 2 is now on!!! Okay, I must confess.. I have never watched a single episode of Glee Season 1. My friends actually gave me a copy of the first few episodes but I was not able to watch it. Or better yet, I did not find the time to even have a look on that show. Glee for me is just one of those musical shows which I am not a fan… But now that Glee is on its second season with a new character played by a Filipina… I watched the first episode last night. Though I am not actually a fan of Charice, I'm happy that she has overcome the barriers and achieved something for herself. She was able to conquer the international arena… which makes most of us, Filipinos proud of her. Anyway eventhough I am not a fan of Glee, I somewhat enjoyed the show last night. I love their rendition of empire state of mind, billionaire and telephone. I am looking forward to more Glee episodes and hopefully, next time, I can actually say that I’m an official fan. J

S&R shopping

Image
Snapshot of S&R last September 17, 2010 I am anti-social. I don’t like going to parties and to crowded places. But there are a few places that I love even if they are crowded… one of them is S&R, especially if they are on sale. Last Friday, my friend asked me if I want to go to S&R for their 5 day sale… automatically I agreed and became excited. I love S&R because of the wide variety of imported goods you can buy from them, and as they say, it is Philippine’s answer to Costco.   Great but reasonably priced stuff… makes me go gaga! Hehehe J There are a lot of people as expected but I can say it is tolerable. I guess you won’t mind the crowded place as long as you can buy cheap stuff! But we did not buy a lot because most of the items are wholesale, so even if the prices are discounted, I don’t think Gerard and I need boxes of milk, shampoo, soap etc. We just bought a couple of stuff such as chocolates, burritos, toilet cleaning agent, ice cream… (oh wait, that s...

Mike&Majo's Wedding 09.18.10

Image
I love attending weddings. It is so nice to witness the profession of love of two people. They enter the church as two people with separate lives and will leave the church as one, starting their journey through married life. Last Saturday, we attended the wedding of one of the close friends of Gerard—Majo Joaquin. Their wedding was held at Tagaytay highlands so as expected, it was a lovely wedding. I enjoyed the homily of the priest because it was already like the profession of vows since he asked the couple if they are really in love with each other. The priest said that in a marriage, there will always be a third party that will rock the marriage. This third party should always be God. He should always be present to have a solid foundation. It was a refreshing idea and a good reminder for married couples like us to put God in the center of our relationship. Anyway, the wedding was also unique and cool in a lot of ways, here are the reasons why.... 1)     Attire: The a...
